Timing

Yesterday morning wasn’t very promising but the forecast said that the clouds would clear in the afternoon, so I tried to time my skiing so that I would at my favourite Gråstöten viewpoint just before sunset. It might have worked otherwise, but the sun disappeared behind clouds before it set. I was really racing against the clock, pushing myself to ski faster to reach any kind of spot at all – I got there with a minute to spare. Just time enough to fish the camera out of the pack and take a shot, and by the time I decided that I needed a different angle, the light was already fading. If only I had left 15 minutes earlier, I would have made it to my first choice spot!

Today’s weather was the reverse – chance of sun in the morning but increasingly cloudy later. So I left early in the morning, the idea was to reach Ånnfjället at sunrise. I did the first 7km in really good time, it took me 1:15h to get to spot where the trail branches up towards the tundra. But then the trouble started – the snow was powdery and it was deep and my skis were sliding backwards in the steep hill. It took 15 minutes to do the last 400m up! It meant that I missed the very first light, but there was still some nice pink light around when I found a spot to shoot it. If only I had left 15 minutes earlier…

Before I reached a better viewpoint, the sun had already disappeared behind clouds again. I need to come back here though, because I think I can get a better panorama from this spot I found today, than what I found in the autumn when I approached from the north. Morning light however will be harder and harder to catch with every passing week (there are limits on how early I want to get up, which explains why I had no safety margins today) so I think I need to fine tune my timing to reach the tundra before sunset!
