Ever since my trip to Sylarna two years ago, I’ve been wanting to see the west side the massif which I missed out on back then. In particular, the lake which is hidden at the foot of Storsylen. The nice weather from yesterday was getting even better – almost no wind and the sun was warm! – so I drove to Nedalshytta just before lunchtime. I was planning to eat a waffle before hitting the trail but their waffle service doesn’t open until at noon, so I had to settle with the sandwich and snacks I had with me. And get an ice cream when I come back. 😀
The trail is quite easy. Most of the altitude is gained in the beginning and then the trail goes gently up and down, most of the time you don’t even notice it. But the views are perhaps not as good as I had hoped for, because you’ve got the lumpy Bandaklompen blocking the view towards Storsylen. So you need to hike about 8 km before you get a good view the highest peak, and that’s when you’re already at Syltjønna. But on a day like this when the lake was mirror calm when I arrived, those 8 km were quickly forgotten. It was so worth it! I took a couple of quick snaps before I settled down to eat. I was worried that the wind would pick up while I eat, but I was absolutely starving by then so I had to get some food in me.
And as luck would have it, the wind wasn’t an issue after my late lunch. I even got this nice feather cloud formation moving over the massif so it wasn’t just a boring blue sky all around. So I walked up and down the lake shore, until it seemed like the wind was breaking the reflections on a permanent basis and it was time for me to leave.
What a stunning place, and I’m sure it would have been even more stunning in the evening if the wind calmed down again. The next time I come here, I must bring a tent and then summit the peak as well! It’s crazy steep and rocky going up, but people do it all the time… even today I was able to see people on the top. Lucky them! And lucky me, for another great hike. 🙂
