I had an itch to go somewhere because the local walks just aren’t interesting to me. So in order to get my butt off the couch, I drove to Järvzoo. It was an overcast day but the cloud cover was very thin, so there was plenty of light for shooting in the zoo, even at the enclosures which normally are dark (like the lynx). So I had light but what I didn’t have was animals. The wolves in the lower enclosure were lounging at the back. The moose were sleeping. The muskox were furthest back in their enclosure. I did get to see the fox this time (so now I know it exists anyway) but as soon as it saw me, it disappeared. Finally at the upper wolf enclosure, the animals were close and actually even moving – I was the first visitor of the day so they came to the front to check me out. And then they thought that I was really boring and settled down to sleep. The wolverines were visible, but far away. At the lynx enclosure, one of them was actually quite close – sleeping. And I found that a spruce had fallen over the rock that normally would provide the best shooting opportunity, if you were lucky enough that the lynx would settle on it. But that option is gone now, until they clear out the tree (which I think they might not do, because it’s not doing any other harm than spoil the best photo opportunity).

I walked back and forth between the wolves and the lynx, and got third time lucky. Even though it was almost an hour until feeding time, the wolves reacted on the sound of the fourwheeler and actually got a little playful for a moment, so I finally got to capture some action. Having been to the zoo so many times already, I only have two ambitions left… shoot fighting, and panning. But anyway, after that short spell of action, it felt like nothing was going to happen again so I didn’t see any point to stay there. Maybe things will pick up in February when it’s mating time!
