Photographing a moon crescent is to be much harder than photographing a full moon. There was an ever so thin crescent yesterday that I kept admiring from the bus window, only to see it disappear behind the clouds by the time we were in Loos. The crescent is still nice today and I admired it from the bus window on the way home. I also observed the clouds in the western horizon. It didn’t take me 10 minutes to half run home, change clothes, pack the camera and throw a fistful of fruit/nut mix in my gob in an effort to shut up my hungry stomach and get out.
I picked the closest possible opportunity to shoot the moon crescent. What I hadn’t taken into consideration is that now that it is warm during the day and cold at night, there’s a crust of hard snow. So what I thought was an easy wade turned out to be very painful when the centimetre thick crust hit just below my kneecaps at every step. I ended up walking with a forward lean so that I could break the crust with my hands before taking a step. Fun fun fun.

And then when I got my spot, the crescent was behind the clouds. The net effect is that you’d think it’s another bright planet, there’s nothing that tips you off that the bright spot lowest on the right is the moon…
It’s really disappointing when this happens. It’s not the first or even the second time I’ve seen something beautiful from the bus window and then missed the opportunity when I finally get home. So I’m happy to say that my public transport commute days are over! Bye bye bus and missed opportunities. I’m moving to Föne later in March!
I found a small house for rent, it’s just perfect for me. There’s a view from the kitchen window over some fields to north, I can already see myself sitting in the kitchen, drinking coffee and looking out for the aurora… and then it doesn’t matter if it’s a late night, because I won’t need to get up until an hour later than I do now and still have time for a lazy breakfast, instead of having to shovel down the food with one eye on the clock so I don’t miss the bus. And in the summer, I can ride bicycle to work! As much as I have loved living in Loos, there’s a time for everything and that time is over now.
