Improvement

Got my Canon 7D MkII from service this week, and it seems like the problem is gone! The attached note says that they adjusted autofocus on both the camera and the lens (Canon 15-85mm) but it appears that no other adjustments were made. I’m not entirely sold on that because if the problem had only been with autofocus, then I should have gotten sharp pictures with manual focus, but that wasn’t the case. But I’m not gonna argue, because the main thing is that the camera and the lens are now performing up to expectations.

I’m not going to say that the Canon lens is suddenly sharp as tack, but I think that whatever shortcomings it has now, can be classified within tolerance limits. It’s very good in the middle and on the right, but on the left it’s still a bit soft, however, nowhere near as ugly as it was before and the area of softness is smaller, so much so that it almost doesn’t matter. Let’s not forget that the 15-85/3.5-5.6 is essentially a kit lens, so expecting it to be as good as Canon L glass is just foolish.

I also snapped a few test shots with the Tokina 11-16/2.8 (this being the lens where I first discovered that I had a problem), and the same improvement is evident here as well, so whatever they did with the camera it has obviously worked. At f8 the lens is actually very good now, all down to the corners! At f2.8 I’m still not convinced, I mean it’s better but it’s… well, I have to take some night sky pictures to make up my mind, because that’s the only time I would ever really use this lens fully open.

Tomorrow I will take the Sigma 70-200/2.8 out for a spin. If it shows the same kind of improvement as the other lenses, then I must say I’ll be very happy!
