Seven hours is all I got. It was a good quality seven hours, but by 5am I just couldn’t sleep any more even if maybe I had needed a bit more. Breakfast is served from 7am, so I got time to go through yesterday’s pictures and write the blog.

There’s no free wifi in Greenland and the paid one ain’t cheap, so I need to plan ahead what to do when I go online so I get everything done before the time runs out. They put a time limit on the surf, but apparently it’s unlimited MB!

There’s no need to get out early otherwise, so we ate a breakfast and then headed out to the ice fjord. It’s about zero degrees and snowing very lightly and at one point it looked like the clouds would break up. But it was very nice light to work with, better than full sunshine for sure! With all the snow around, it’s very bright. Need sunglasses even with the clouds.

In the afternoon we did one of the highlights off the vacation (yes, I can say that even this is only the first full day), we went on a boat trip on the ice fjord. There is so much ice… the guides said that when they arrived on Thursday, there was no ice in the fjord. But a few hours later, it was packed – the ice can drift in and out. Sometimes the Ilulissat harbour is completely blocked and it’s starting to look like that now, because we had hard time getting out. The captain was ever so carefully nudging the icebergs and icefloats away to clear the passage. But once we got out of the harbour, it was easier although I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it was clear sailing anywhere.

We went from one big iceberg to the next, even up to the gigantic ones. The mind almost refused to accept how big they are… and then consider that 90% of the iceberg is under water!

When we got back to the harbour, we found it even more packed with ice than before. It was really tricky to get in, but these people have a lifetime of experience and I’m sure that this wasn’t even the most difficult passage for them. But for us normal mortals, it was a very exciting experience!
