Horsetail

I found a green spot yesterday but the place is so mosquito infested that I didn’t want to stop and change the lens because the bugs were eating through my jacket. Today I came equipped with the right lens already mounted and a mosquito proof jacket on, so I was able to shoot in peace despite the swarm of mosquitoes around me.

There’s a small creek that runs through Föne, and as it winds down towards Ljusdan, it is surrounded by similar ”flood plains” as the big river, except in smaller scale of course. Many of these old riverbeds contain a little bit of water to support all kinds of grasses, creating this illusion of a green river. In the picture, some of the grass is almost blue though… it really is its colour, not glare. The spruce forest is covered with green mosses, I couldn’t find any good compositions today so I need to visit the place yet again. At least it’s close to me, if I take the bicycle it’s mostly downhill so I pretty much just roll down there… a bit harder to come back but never mind.

I was going to only take these pictures I missed yesterday and go home, but I decided to continue to Ljusnan anyway to see if I could do anything about the old riverbeds in overcast weather, and most importantly, to see what the birch forest would look like with the lily of the valley in bloom. However… when I got to the birch forest, I found that there was almost no lily of the valley in sight. Everything was covered with wood horsetail, I mean if I was talking about a river of grass earlier, then this sure was a sea of horsetail! I’ve seen horsetail before but never like this, it was almost surreal.

Bordering the flood plains, there’s one island in the Ljusnan river that I’ve been trying to find a way to for a few times now. In the satellite pictures it looks like there would be a land connection, but now I’ve walked along the whole length of the island and I haven’t found a way. If I could jump 3 meters it would be ok, but I can’t… so I’m left hoping that this will be a dry summer and the water level will recede enough to create a land bridge. I can see that there’s another fallen barn on that island, I want to see it up close!
