A few years ago I was swept away in nostalgia and bought an analogue camera and a bunch of film rolls and development bags. The wave of nostalgia petered away long before my film stock did, so I’ve had these rolls in the freezer ever since. But then I heard of a local photographer who had never jumped on the digital bandwagon and decided to give away my rolls and development bags, because for sure I’ll never be using them myself. The films are way past they best-before dates and I doubt it helps that they’ve been frozen, but it looks like the development service still exists so those bags will be useful.
In principle, I still like slide film. It was incredibly gratifying to see a well shot slide of Velvia on the light table, I’ve never had the same feeling with the digital pictures on the computer. But after all these years, digital pictures are the norm and the memory of the slides on the light table is fading. It can be incredibly gratifying to see a well shot RAW and then process it and see the picture just like I wanted it to come out. And suddenly I don’t miss those slides any more…
