Avian action

As you saw from my previous post, yesterday morning was quite bleak with low clouds. The sun came out in the afternoon though, and it makes all the difference, so I drove out to check the cranes and red-throated divers.

I found where the cranes have their nest. I also found that they have a guest, I took a picture of the crane foraging for food when I spotted a smaller bird in the frame… I think it’s a common greenshank (Tringa nebularia). That’s the closest match I could find anyway.

The red-throated loons have not started nesting yet. For a moment I thought that the bird was returning to the nest to incubate when it hopped on land, but then it was closely followed by the other diver, and … well, let’s just say that they are preparing to start incubating soon… 😉

This is where I thought it (the female, as it turned out) was going to incubate
definitely not incubating
But the other bird (the male) followed right behind and they are definitely not incubating!

The male went back to the water immediately after the act and started grooming itself

The female followed after a moment, groomed itself for a short while and then started sleeping
wing spread
The male spent at least three times more time on preening and just when I thought my legs were dead for grouching down awkwardly, it finally spread its wings

The male joined the female after this, and also started sleeping. I was finally able to stand up and get the blood circulation going in my legs!
