Season

I had big problems last night with deciding where I would go today. Having stared at the maps all evening, I finally saw an option that I never thought of before so that’s what I decided to do. I drove to Tänndalen and took the snowcat to the Andersborg cabin (and surprise, I did not go in to get a waffle!) to spare myself the climb up to the tundra. I had a lot of skiing to do anyway, following the backcountry trail (which means that the ski tracks are not prepared) to Hamra, then go northeast to the Svalåtjärn wind shelter and finally back south to Andersborg and Tänndalen.

It actually rained last night and the effect on the snow cover is visible. There are a lot more dark patches on the mountains and even the trails are starting to melt, quite a few times I had to do detours to get around the bare spots. The snow was quite heavy to ski on as well, it was wet and the skis sunk in a little, but at least it was still skiable.

Just enough clouds to make it interesting

One thing was obvious – the season was over. Sunday is a ”stugbytardag”, it means a day when this week’s tourists check out from the cabins and next week’s tourists check in. But at this time of the year, there aren’t many tourists coming in any more so as soon as I left Andersborg, the crowd kept getting thinner until it completely disappeared by the time I was doing the northeastern side of my triangle. When I got to the wind shelter, I came across the ”trail hosts” who drive around on snowmobiles to check the condition of the trails and possibly find stranded skiers – like they thought I was. I convinced them that everything is going according to plan and that I’m ok to continue my trek. Then when I was a couple of km from Andersborg, they had done their survey round and came back to check on me again and asked if I needed a ride back to Tänndalen. I must have looked a lot worse for wear than I was… I declined their offer and finished my trip with honour!

It was another warm and sunny day, I really can’t think of a better way to finish the season. Just think back to when I started my skiing season with blisters and misery and now, after four intensive days of skiing my feet are feeling great! I decided to finish while I’m on top and not do any more skiing tomorrow. After four days, I think I need a rest anyway so I will just pack up and drive home. It’s been one of the best Easter breaks I can remember!
