My idea for today’s picture was to show that Fönesjön is now free of ice. I take a note of it every year, and during these three springs I’ve lived in Föne, this is obviously the earliest the ice has disappeared.

I parked my car at the bus stop which provides a view over the lake and got out. There was a pair of Canada goose swimming that I thought I could use in my composition but they didn’t really like my appearance and started hooting their warnings. But they were not nesting nor were they swimming away so I ignored their hoots and went about shooting. Then I saw some movement on the left, and saw… a bird plucking feathers from a carcass? I pointed my camera that way although I knew I would only get mushy pixels, but I might be able to see what was going on anyway. I then zoomed out to get both the raptor and the geese in the frame (because I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing) but then the bird had enough of me and took off. If you look very very carefully in the picture, you’ll see the bird in flight and slightly below to the left you’ll see a white-ish line that is the carcass. It looks quite big, I wonder what it is?

I’m sorry that I frightened off the buzzard but I mean, what were the odds? When I get out of a car at a bus stop, I don’t normally check the surroundings to see if there’s a raptor feeding on prey near by. I hope it flew back to the carcass after I drove off, anyway.
