- Song: Nobody’s Hero
- Artist: Rush
- Year: 1993
For many many years, I held Nobody’s Hero as the best song I had ever heard. If I’d made this list 3 years ago, you’d find it in the #1 spot. Unfortunately this is a song that will drop even further down in the list in the future, simply because I’ve listened to it too much! I first heard it on the radio in Finland when it was released, it never got much of airplay though but I only needed to hear it once to start liking it. When I finally got hold of the CD, I had Nobody’s Hero was playing on repeat. And I’ve played it very heavily ever since, to the point where I almost don’t want to hear the track any more, just for the fear of getting tired of it. Because for sure, this is one song that I don’t want to get tired of.
Unlike most other music I listen to, Nobody’s Hero carries a serious message with it. The verses tell stories of true life people, and the chorus talks about how we look up to celebrities as heroes, while the true heroes in life go unnoticed. The song is 24 years old, and today the message is more poignant than ever. You really need to listen to this.
I have been going on and on about how I use music as a distraction. Nobody’s Hero is a not a distraction to me, it cuts straight to my heart and demands my attention and never lets go for one second. It is impossible for me to stay unmoved by it, and it finally also speaks the words that we all can relate to:
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart
