Mælifellssandur

Our first day in the highlands was another familiar place for me, but the weather couldn’t have been more different than two years ago. It was still a bit cloudy in the morning, but the clouds faded fast and all we got was blue skies! On top of that, it was almost calm. I could hardly believe it! It was a fabulous day to be out even if the blue skies provided a challenge for photography.

Our first stop was at Öldufell, there’s a waterfall which I completely skipped two years ago because I went on a walk-about instead. But this time, I had a proper look at the big waterfall, had some trouble making it work, and settled with shooting a smaller fall with Öldufell in the background. By the time we finished our session, it was sunny.

I had a nice walk in the lava fields, but not so nice pictures. It was surprising to see that the black sand was not so black now, it was in fact brown! I have to say, this is one place where I would prefer that it rained. Or snowed. It brings out the drama!

We drove past Mælifell to the campsite at Strútur to enjoy our lunch. On the way back, when we got to Mælifell again, some clouds were starting to form so I basically took the same pictures I took earlier, except now with clouds. Nicer that way.

Mælifell with blue sky. I would have liked to shoot these same pillows of moss later when the clouds appeared above the mountain, but I couldn’t do it without getting my shadow in the frame.

Our lunch site is also a trail head to a lot of presumably very interesting and beautiful places
