There’s one area in Ljusdal which has been hotly contended as long as I have lived here. There used to be a sawmill next to the lake but they have now demolished it and the big question they have debated for years is, what to do with this area. Everything from swimming halls to shopping malls have been suggested and to my knowledge, they are no closer to a decision than they were 10 years ago. But something is happening anyway – this summer, they converted one stretch of the lakeshore into a sandy beach (it’s just mud otherwise) and built changing rooms and a few jetties and even a small pier and did other landscaping (and still are doing it) and I must say, I’m impressed. If it wasn’t for one little detail – the lake is still too polluted to bathe in!

There’s a sign on the beach saying that you bathe at your own risk…
