Homebound

Särvfjället is a perfect place for a ”last day of vacation” hike. It doesn’t require a detour, it’s accessible and provides options for both short and long hikes. And today the good weather continued, it was much like the morning yesterday except that it didn’t get overcast later. A little bit cloudy, yes, but it was those nice clouds that work well in pictures. Or would work, if there was anything to take pictures of. The colours really are gone, both on the ground and on the trees. But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the hike of course. The idea was to walk around the horseshoe (I’m using the term very liberally here), basically go from peak to peak and circle the massif.

When I got closer to the first peak, it got very rocky though. Crazy rocky. If the rest of the mountain was as bad, then I would have to give up the whole thing, but luckily the ground got much easier when I came down from the first peak. And then I just went up and down the peaks… there weren’t so many vertical metres to do, after the first climb.

At one point I made a wrong turn and ended up on one of the ”inner” peaks, instead of following the imagined horseshoe. It wouldn’t have been much of an issue to switch back to the horseshoe but I noticed that I had spent a longer time on this hike than I had planned, maybe that rock field in the beginning had slowed me down. I started to feel that I needed to get home, it’s not like I will get to Finland any faster but I wasn’t so happy about staying up on the mountain either. So I took the shortcut, and I’ll choose to see it as a positive thing because I have the eastern side of the horseshoe left for another visit!

So tomorrow I’m off to Stockholm and then to Finland and I’m not taking the camera with me. It’s not that kind of a trip.
