Canon 6D

While I’ve been on holiday, Canon released a new SLR and it’s the fullframe 6D as rumoured. So that’s it then – it’s my new camera! Just as well that I didn’t get the Tokina 16-28mm and Canon 24-105mm lenses sold, because now I will need them. Those investments I made in the Tokina 11-16mm and Sigma 18-125mm lenses were maybe not as smart… but it was based on an assumption that Canon would release 7D MkII (or something with an APS-C size sensor) instead of a brand new model which is now the 6D. I will have to check my bank balance to see if I can manage without selling either the lenses or the 40D and have it converted for infrared instead, that way I could keep using those small lenses. Especially the Tokina 11-16mm, it really is a wonderful lens!

But despite this lens overflow, I’m happy. The 6D has all the features I have been wanting for years:

  • weather sealing (maybe not as good as 1D but better than 40D anyway)
  • ISO expansion to 50
  • +/- 5 stops bracketing (but only 3 frames, or did I mis-read the specs?)
  • GPS
  • in-camera HDR (time will tell how good it works)

And most importantly – Canon stuck to a ”modest” 20 MP (I love it that they didn’t go megalomaniac on this) for the full size sensor, so there’s a reason to expect some very good high ISO performance. My night photography will definitely get a boost from this!

There’s only a couple of reservations I have about this camera but no deal-breakers. As a whole, I’m really excited about the 6D and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

As I said yesterday, I spent the day resting. Just as well, because in the morning it was snowing and then it started raining. But on the tundra with the colder temperatures, it was all snow and now the mountains have this wonderful decoration. Before the vacation, I was dreaming of snowcapped peaks and autumn colours… sometimes you actually get what you wish for! In the evening it looked like there was a gap in the clouds in the west, but somehow the clouds kept moving with the sun so there was never any bright sunshine on the mountains. But at least I got some light on the foreground, and I will be dreaming of sunlight tomorrow because that snow is not going anywhere with the kind of temperatures we have now!
