The weather is getting warmer by now but it’s still overcast, so I thought I would use the light on flowers and waterfalls. The best location for doing both on one trip is Silverfallet in Skärkdalen. The path to the falls passes through some rich mires with many different orchids and other special flora. But as I’ve said so many times before, summer is late this year and so are the flowers. Sure enough, I found lots of budding orchids of different species while the lapland marsh orchid was the only one already open in any significant numbers. So in the end, it wasn’t really the macro feast I had been looking for but I’m not sure if I’m disappointed anyway. I mean, as I was walking along my eyes kept registering all the different flowers and every time I found something special, it was like an exclamation mark in my head. I’m starting to feel like I’ve hit a creative dead end with the photography while my interest in botany is going strong. I’m more excited about finding new species than shooting the same old ones…
When I got to the falls, I found that there was too much water. I was expecting that so it wasn’t a disappointment, so I took it more for a reconnaissance trip and walked up on the right side of the falls, instead of crossing the bridge and going up on the left side which is the normal way. It was soon very obvious why everyone takes the left side, because it was much harder to find any good views from the right side. The best spot I found packed a surprise in other aspects as well – lots of flowers. It’s a cliff formation with a lot of cracks between the rocks and there was a flower coming up from each of them, and some of the species are uncommon. So as I was saying, this is a good spot for a waterfall and a flower aficianado like me!
